The Show Must Go On (Anvil performance)
The children have been working really hard to learn the songs for the Anvil performance on Tuesday 21st March. If you would like to order tickets for this performance, tickets are on sale from Tuesday 21st February. If you haven’t done so already, please sign and return the permission slips as soon as possible.

Spelling
The year 3/4 spellings we are focusing on this week are: often, opposite, ordinary and particular. Please practise these at home. You will be tested on all the words on the Year 3/4 word list each half term.
In the back of your child’s homework diary, they have written a list of KS1 spellings that they need to learn. Please ensure that your child practises these at home.

English
Over the next few weeks, the children will be writing their own non-chronological reports. They will begin by looking at a variety of reports and will start to rehearse a new text. This week, the children will focus on the features of a non-chronological report. The grammar focus will be fronted adverbials, paragraphs and subordinating conjunctions.

Maths
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be focusing on length and perimeter. The children will practise measuring in millimetres, centimetres and metres. They will then make comparisons and start to find the perimeter of a range of shapes.

On 21st March, year 3 will be taking part in the music festival ‘The Show Must Go On!’. Letters have been sent home with all detailed included. Children have been given log in details so they can log on to the website and learn the songs. Please can I asked that you encourage your children to practise the songs at home as well as at school.

Happy new year to all of you. Welcome to the Spring term. This term, our exciting new topic is ‘Inventors and Inventions’. We are so excited for activities we have planned for you. This half term, we will be focusing on lots of Science and later in the term, we will continue learning history.

In English this week, the children will have the chance to write their own exciting diary entries. The children have very much enjoyed being ‘explorers’ allowing them to explore different jungles around the world. This week, the children will travel to their own destination and will write their own ‘jungle log’​.

This week’s grammar focus will be adverbial phrases, subordinating conjunctions, paragraphs and expanded noun phrases.
Maths
Last week, the children worked exceptionally hard using the column method to add 3-digit numbers, exchanging across tens and hundreds. This week, the children will use the column method to subtract 3 digit numbers with exchanging. To support your child’s learning, please continue to encourage your child to confidently learn their number bonds to 10.

Last week, we started to learn the text ‘Jungle Log’ and created a new story map to support our learning. This week, the children will have a chance to work together to plan and write a shared diary entry. This week’s grammar focus will be adverbial phrases and conjunctions.
Maths
We are still working hard on the unit addition and subtraction. The children will practise using the part whole model and number lines and will use the manipulatives to aid their learning. The children will also use their number bond knowledge to make connections when adding and subtracting mentally. Please can I ask for you to help your children confidently learn their number bonds to 10/100.

In maths, the children have been working hard adding numbers without exchanging. This week, we will be moving on to adding ones and tens to a 3-digit number with exchanging. We will then move on to subtracting numbers with exchanging.

This week, the children will continue to learn the instruction text ‘How to look after a pet dragon’. As a class, we will then plan and write our own instruction text. This week’s grammar focus will be adverbs for time and expanded noun phrases.
Maths
In maths, we will be moving on to addition and subtraction. The children will begin by applying number bonds to 10. They will then use their number bonds knowledge to add numbers to 100 and 1000. The children will then move on to add and subtract 5, 10 and 100 to a 3 digit number. Please click on the link below if you would like additional work for your child.

Last week, the children worked exceptionally hard to complete their stories with a moral. I am incredibly proud of the fantastic work they have produced.
This week, we will be moving on to a new unit looking at instructions. The children will look at a variety of instructions and will start to explore why they are used. We will also look at the features of an instruction text.
Grammar focus: commas in a list and paragraphs
Maths
This week in maths, children will estimate numbers on a number line and will continue ordering and comparing numbers to 1000. We will also start counting up in 50s!

Keep recording your reading daily reading in your reading records/school diary and write three comments about the book you are currently reading. It is important that an adult signs your reading record. I will collect your reading records every Monday and Friday and check.

This week in English, the children will have the chance to write their own exciting stories with a moral. The children have enjoyed reading a variety of fables and now they are ready to start planning their own. The grammar focus this week will be: expanded noun phrases, adverbs and speech marks.
Maths
Over the next few weeks, we will be concentrating on place value, looking at numbers up to 1000. This week, children will look at number lines and will start to find 100 more/100 less of a number. We will also be comparing numbers to 1000, particularly looking at the place value of each number.

This week in English, we will be looking at new stories with a moral and will be comparing it to the story The Fox and the Raven. We will look closely at speech marks and begin to write our own shared story with a moral.
Maths
Over the next few weeks, we will be concentrating on place value, looking at numbers up to 1000. This week, will be focusing on partitioning numbers to 1000. We will also continue to practise the place values of thousands, hundred, tens and ones. I would encourage your children to practise looking at numbers up to 1000, allowing them to partition the number given. Please look at the model below which might be useful.

I would just like to say a huge well done to all of you for completing your first week in year 3. It has been lovely getting to know each and every one of you.

This week, we will be starting lots of new and exciting learning. Our first topic this term is the Roman Empire. The children will explore the invasion of Britain, the Roman army, gods and goddesses and the Celts. The children will be comparing the differing ways of life at that point in history.

English

In English, we will be starting a new unit, focusing on narratives with a moral. The children will spend some time learning the narrative ‘The Fox and the Raven’.
