Year 3 Preview Learning Archive 22-23

 


03 July 2023

Year 3, 4 and 5 are part of the year 6 leaving performance. Next Monday (10th), we are doing a full run through of the production. Please can I ask that all children bring in their outfits in on Monday or before will be fine. The children can wear the outfit they wore to the Anvil or similar to this.

Please can I ask that the children wear black bottoms and a colourful/sparkly top. If you have any questions, please just ask. 

English
This week, the children will have the opportunity to independently create a persuasive brochure. In there brochure, they will use persuasive language, alliteration, rhetorical questions and adjectives to persuade the reader to book a holiday and stay at their high-class hotel.  

Maths 
This week in maths, the children will continue to identify and describe 2-D and 3-D shapes. Later in the week, they will identify and draw polygons.  If you would like some additional work to support your child at home, please click on the link below:

In English this week, we will be continuing to work on the new unit of ‘persuasive writing’. This week, we will be focusing on pronouns, persuasive language and alliteration. Later on in the week, we will create a class persuasive brochure giving the children the opportunity to practise these skills before they write their own next week.

12 June 2023

On Thursday, year 3 and 4 are on a school trip to Englefield Estate. Please can I ask that all children have a rucksack, water bottle and sun hat (if needed). If you could apply sun cream before school, that will be great. We look forward to another fun and educational day out!

Bake sale 
We would just like to say a huge thank you to every single one of you who supported year 3 in our bake sale on Friday. Whether that was making cakes, buying cakes or helping to sell the cakes. Thank you very much.

Over the next couple of weeks, our English will be linked to the book ‘The Iron Man’. Not only are we currently reading this book in whole class guided reading, but we are now using this book as a hook in English. There are many exciting activities planned and I looked forward to seeing the work that the children produce.

Bake sale! 
This Friday, it is year 3’s turn to run the bake sale! As you know, all year groups have been competing against each other by selling cakes to raise money for our school. If possible, please can I ask that you bake cakes and bring them in to school Friday morning. These can be made at home or bought from the shop. Straight after school, some of the children will help sell the cakes (I will be picking out of a hat). If you are happy to support your child to help run the bake sale, we would be very grateful. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are able to help run the bake sale.

EASTER BREAK


27 March 2023

The children have worked incredibly hard this half term. They have enjoyed learning all about sound, electricity, light and the Stone Age. To end our topic Inventors and Inventions, the children were able to take part in the ‘ fabulous finish ‘junk orchestra’ . I am sure there will be some photos to follow. Not to mention another fabulous finish, last week, the children performed at the Anvil and what a performance it was! I think we can all agree, they were absolutely amazing!  They should be very proud of themselves. I am very much looking forward to next term.

In English this week, we are using the book ‘Stone Age, Bone Age’. The children will have the chance to plan and write a diary entry writing from the point of view of a stone age boy. We will be focusing adverbial phrases, conjunctions, paragraphs and writing in first person.

The Show Must Go On (Anvil performance) 
On Tuesday 21st March, the children will be performing at the Anvil. Please encourage your children to learn the rest of the songs at home. We have another rehearsal this Thursday!  

Spelling  
The year 3/4 spellings we are focusing on this week are: possible, pressure, potatoes and probably. Please practise these at home. You will be tested on all the words on the Year 3/4 word list each half term.

In English this week, the children will be writing their own non-chronological report. They will start by creating their own mythical creature and will begin to write expanded noun phrases to describe their creature. Later in the week, they will start to plan and write their reports. I am very much looking forward to reading all of the fantastic non chronological reports.  

Maths 
Over the next few weeks, we will be learning all about fractions. We will continue focusing comparing fractions and whole numbers. Later in the week, we will start to look at equivalent fractions. If you would like to support your child at home, you can click on the link below. Over the next few weeks, the children will be writing their own non-chronological reports. They will begin by looking at a variety of reports and will start to rehearse a new text. Thchildren will look closely at the features of a non-chronological report. The grammar focus will be fronted adverbials, paragraphssubordinating conjunctions and expanded noun phrases. 

Maths 

Over the next few weeks, we will be learning all about fractions. This week, we revise denominators and numerators and will start to compare fractions. This week, the children will travel to their own destination and will write their own ‘jungle log’​.

The children had another fantastic week in year 3. It is great to see so many children reading at home. Keep up the good work!

English
This week, the children will continue to learn the instruction text ‘How to look after a pet dragon’. As a class, we will then plan and write our own instruction text. This week’s grammar focus will be adverbs for time and expanded noun phrases.

Maths
In maths, we will be moving on to addition and subtraction. The children will begin by applying number bonds to 10. They will then use their number bonds knowledge to add numbers to 100 and 1000. The children will then move on to add and subtract 5, 10 and 100 to a 3 digit number. Please click on the link below if you would like additional work for your child.

Time tables
In year 2, your child should have learned their 2, 5 and 10 time tables. In year 3, we will be learning our 3, 4 and 8 times tables. It would be a great help if you could encourage your children to practise these at home.

Homework
Homework will be given to your child every Monday and will be collected the following Monday. Children will take home a comprehension booklet and will be expected to complete one text a week. We will then mark the comprehension together, giving the children the opportunity to discuss their answers. Verbal feedback will be given to each child.
This week’s comprehension task will be ‘Let’s get growing’ pages 10 and 11. This piece of work should be handed in on Monday 17th October.

Reading
Keep recording your reading daily reading in your reading records/school diary and write three comments about the book you are currently reading. It is important that an adult signs your reading record. I will collect your reading records every Monday and Friday and check.

Spelling
The year 3/4 spellings we are focusing on this week are: build, busy, business and calendar. Please practise these at home. You will be tested on all the words on the Year 3/4 word list each half term.

PE
Children have PE on Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure they have their PE kits for these days.

English
Last week, the children worked exceptionally hard to complete their stories with a moral. I am incredibly proud of the fantastic work they have produced.
This week, we will be moving on to a new unit looking at instructions. The children will look at a variety of instructions and will start to explore why they are used. We will also look at the features of an instruction text.
Grammar focus: commas in a list and paragraphs

Maths
This week in maths, children will estimate numbers on a number line and will continue ordering and comparing numbers to 1000. We will also start counting up in 50s!

Y3 – Place value

Homework
Homework will be given to your child every Monday and will be collected the following Monday. Children will take home a comprehension booklet and will be expected to complete one text a week. We will then mark the comprehension together, giving the children the opportunity to discuss their answers. Verbal feedback will be given to each child.
This week’s comprehension task will be Bill’s New Frock, pages 8 and 9. This piece of work should be handed in on Monday 10th October.

This week in English, the children will have the chance to write their own exciting stories with a moral. The children have enjoyed reading a variety of fables and now they are ready to start planning their own. The grammar focus this week will be: expanded noun phrases, adverbs and speech marks.

Maths
Over the next few weeks, we will be concentrating on place value, looking at numbers up to 1000. This week, children will look at number lines and will start to find 100 more/100 less of a number. We will also be comparing numbers to 1000, particularly looking at the place value of each number.

This week in English, we will be looking at new stories with a moral and will be comparing it to the story The Fox and the Raven. We will look closely at speech marks and begin to write our own shared story with a moral.

Maths
Over the next few weeks, we will be concentrating on place value, looking at numbers up to 1000. This week, will be focusing on partitioning numbers to 1000. We will also continue to practise the place values of thousands, hundred, tens and ones. I would encourage your children to practise looking at numbers up to 1000, allowing them to partition the number given. Please look at the model below which might be useful.

I would just like to say a huge well done to all of you for completing your first week in year 3. It has been lovely getting to know each and every one of you.

This week, we will be starting lots of new and exciting learning. Our first topic this term is the Roman Empire. The children will explore the invasion of Britain, the Roman army, gods and goddesses and the Celts. The children will be comparing the differing ways of life at that point in history.

English

In English, we will be starting a new unit, focusing on narratives with a moral. The children will spend some time learning the narrative ‘The Fox and the Raven’.
