This week in English, we will be looking at different types of recount. We will then plan a class write based on the events from the novel Fireweed.

Comprehension: Children will bring in a new comprehension pack home. Please complete the questions and bring them in for marking for 10.07.23.

Spellings: The spelling we are focusing on all common exception words for year 5. Please can you help your child learn the ones they are finding tricky.  

For Maths we are looking at converting units. We will convert kg and g, km and m, cm and mm, convert from metric to imperial. For most of the maths this term the children will need to rely on addition, multiplication, subtraction and division; therefore, it is so important that they know their times tables facts as well as basic number facts. Practising a little everyday (2-5 mins) will improve their knowledge and help them to access the maths learning more easily this term.

Last week in English, year 5 wrote beautiful poems about the coast and beach. Words cannot describe how amazing these poems are and how much effort has gone into them. This week they are learning their lines and performing them to another class.

Spellings: The spelling we are focusing on this week are: immediately, lightning, marvellous and neighbour. Please practise these at home. You will be tested on all the words on the Year 5/6 word list each term.   

For Maths we are looking at negative numbers. We will learn how to count negative numbers in 1s and in multiples, add and subtract negative numbers. Last week in English, we looked at features of a poem and analysed a few poems written by others. This week we will generate rich vocabulary, simile, metaphor and rhyming pairs. We will use these write our poem.

Welcome back year 5. Hope you had a relaxing half term.

In English, this week we are starting a new unit on poetry. We will read some example poems around the theme ‘Coast’ and analyse the structure and language patterns used in poetry.

We will look at how to add and subtract decimals with different number of decimal places, to explore efficient strategies for adding and subtracting decimals and look at decimal patterns. For most of the maths this term the children will need to rely on addition, multiplication, subtraction and division; therefore, it is so important that they know their times tables facts as well as basic number facts. Practising a little everyday (2-5 mins) will improve their knowledge and help them to access the maths learning more easily this term.

In English, this week we will finish writing our adventure story and edit it. We will then shift our focus to a new unit.  We will be looking at an extract from Harry Potter book called the ‘The Tale of Three Brothers’ by J.K Rowling. We will explore the text in detail, focusing on vocabulary, features of a traditional tale and creating a story map.

In English, this week we will continue to analyse adventure stories. We will specifically look into various cohesive devices to make paragraphs flow. We will also look into how to integrate dialogues to move the action forward and as well as a tool to convey more information about the character.

In  English, this week we will looking at adventure stories- what makes a good adventure story and why they are popular amongst children. We will learn the model text ‘Kidnapped!’ and gather ideas which will enable the children to write their own versions later in the unit.

In English, we will be shifting our purpose of writing focus from persuasion to instruction. We will be looking at example text and we will analyse it to identify the main structure and features. This enable us to map the text and prepare our toolkit so we include all the necessary grammar and language features.

In English, our purpose of writing will shift from narrative to persuasion. In preparation, we will be looking at modal verbs, adverbs of possibility, brackets and dashes. We will take part in class debates to build our arguments and reasoning in order to persuade effectively.

In English, year 5 will be writing their own origin story based on Kipling’s ‘Just So’ stories. I can’t wait to read their amazing stories.

In English, last week we looked at ‘Just so Stories’ by Rudyard Kipling. This week we will choose an animal and plan an origin story around how that particular animal got its distinctive feature. We will identify the grammar and language features necessary for writing an effective origin story.

In English, this week we will be analysing the characters from the text ‘The Jungle book’. We will look at how Kipling uses personification to bring the animals to life. We will take part in drama so as compose authentic dialogues between characters in order to prepare us to write direct speech using the correct punctuation.

In English, this week we will be watching a Christmas advert (The Greatest Gift). We will start by watching the video and summarising its contents using expressions to time, place and cause to show how the story develops chronologically. We will then plan and write our own diary entries based on the father in the video. Spellings: The spelling we are focusing on this week are: accommodate, accompany, according and achieve. Please practise these at home. You will be tested on all the words on the Year 5/6 word list each term.

For Maths this week we will be starting a unit on place value. We will be securing our understanding of numbers to 100,000. We will also be learning Roman numerals to 1,000.

For most of the maths this term the children will need to rely on their times table knowledge, therefore it is so important that they know their times tables facts and can answer questions quickly. Practising a little everyday (2-5 mins) will improve their knowledge and help them to access the maths learning more easily this term.

Remember:

  • Keep recording your reading daily reading in your home/school diary and make sure your parents have signed it. You should have at least three reads (title of book, pages read and day read). I will collect them in next Monday.

  • The more you read the better your understanding will be and it will also improve your writing.
