Year 1

PE:   The children will have two PE sessions a week. On Wednesdays please can they come into school wearing their PE kit with their school clothes in their bags.

Our second session will be on Thursday afternoons. The children can wear their school uniform on Thursdays as we have time to change.

THIS WEEK’S LEARNING:

This week in Maths we are finishing our work on Mass and Volume.

We will be comparing the volume of different containers, and then will estimate and measure the capacity of a range of different containers.

We will also be looking at problem solving, for example if 3 cups fill one container how many cups will fill 2 containers.

If you would like to practice at home what we have been learning about in school, then please use the workbook on the WhiteRose Maths  website Y1-Mass-and-capacity.pdf (whiteroseeducation.com) If you would like a printed copy please let me know.

In English we will be practising our handwriting in preparation for starting to join our letters.

In Phonics we will be consolidating this terms alternative spellings and magic e sounds.

We would like to wish you a lovely Easter,

Kind regards

Mrs Clifford and Mrs Whittaker

Common exception words are words where the usual spelling rule doesn't apply. As children come across unfamiliar spelling and sound patterns in tricky words, their phonics knowledge won't always help them to sound out and read the word; such as the common exception words "sugar", "improve", "climb" and "because".

Some of these exception words are used frequently, so children are introduced to common exception words in Year 1 and Year 2.

Y1 SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME

As a school, we adopt a mastery approach to teaching Mathematics, using White Rose Maths as our core scheme. The following links will take you to workbooks, videos and games which may be helpful in consolidating your learning at homehttps://whiterosemaths.com/maths-with-michael

RECOMMENDED READING

Please encourage your children to read at home and complete their reading diaries.

Pie Corbett’s Reading Spine is a core of books that create a living library inside a child’s mind. It is a store of classics and essential reads that help children engage at a deeper level and enter the world of the story.

What have we been up to ?

Please check this section regularly to see photos of our activities.

As part of our Eco Week Year 1 have been learning about the effects of litter on the environment. We designed posters and put them up around school to tell others about the damage litter can cause, and we went litter picking. It was surprising how much we found!

As part of our Regal Rulers Marvellous Middle the children have been using their DT skills to design and make castles, royal coats, flags and bridges. Parents were able to come in and see the children’s finished work.

 Regal Rulers topic,

Year 1 have been learning about how nobility would have lived during the middle ages, compared to the life peasants would have had.

We made Royal Bread and Peasant Bread and tasted the difference between the two recipes. All of the children preferred the Royal Bread!!!!
