Year 2

PE is on a Monday and Wednesday. Please can I ask that PE kits are in school on these days. The children will get changed at school both days and can take their PE kits home on Wednesday.

THIS WEEK’S LEARNING

We have another exciting and productive week ahead and we are looking forward to seeing all the fantastic learning the children will produce.

Maths
In Maths, we are beginning a new unit focusing on mass, capacity and temperature. Throughout the week, the children will explore:

  • Measuring and comparing mass
  • Measuring and comparing capacity
  • Understanding and reading temperature

The children will take part in practical, hands-on activities using real-life resources to help deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge to problem-solving tasks.

English
In English, we will be exploring poetry inspired by the work of Edward Lear. The children will read and enjoy a range of his famous nonsense poems, focusing on features such as rhyme, rhythm and playful language. They will then use these ideas to plan and write their own imaginative nonsense poems.

Phonics
In phonics this week, we are focusing on the ‘o’ sound spelt after w and qu. For example:

  • want
  • quantity
  • squash
  • watch

The children will practise reading and spelling words with this sound and apply their knowledge in both reading and writing activities.

Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)
At the end of the week, the children will be sent home with their logins for Times Tables Rock Stars. This is a fun and engaging way for them to practise and consolidate their multiplication and division skills at home.

A Note to End the Term
The children have had a fantastic term and have all worked incredibly hard. We are very proud of their efforts and progress.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming them back in the summer term, where we will begin learning all about our next exciting topic: holidays!

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Kind regards,
Mrs Gray

Common exception words are words where the usual spelling rule doesn't apply. As children come across unfamiliar spelling and sound patterns in tricky words, their phonics knowledge won't always help them to sound out and read the word; such as the common exception words "sugar", "improve", "climb" and "because".

Some of these exception words are used frequently, so children are introduced to common exception words in Year 1 and Year 2.

RECOMMENDED READING

Please encourage your children to read at home and complete their reading diaries.

Pie Corbett’s Reading Spine is a core of books that create a living library inside a child’s mind. It is a store of classics and essential reads that help children engage at a deeper level and enter the world of the story.
